South Indian Sesame Seeds Curry with Rice

Sesame seeds as an ingredient are so flavourful and aromatic, that it used in almost every cuisine, in some form or the other. This south Indian dish, is remarkably unique and a blend of interesting flavours and textures. I am sure you cannot make it just once!

Serves 4

Ingredients

For the Curry

  • Peanuts – 4tbsp – dry roast and de-skin
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
  • Clove – 2
  • Coconut – 3tbsp, grated
  • Coriander seeds – 1tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Sesame seeds – 4tbsp
  • Ginger paste – ½ tsp
  • Onions – 4, slant chopped
  • Tamarind – 2tsp
  • Green chillies – 4
  • Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Tomato (sour) – 1, slit it on top
  • Potato – 2, boiled and slant chopped
  • Green chilli paste – 1tbsp (Depends on the level of spice you prefer)
  • Oil – 5tbsp
  • Salt to taste

For the Rice

  • Rice – 1.5 cup
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
  • Clove – 2
  • Bay leaf – 1
  • Ginger paste – ¼ tsp
  • Garlic paste – ½ tsp
  • Green chillies – 4, slit
  • Coriander – 2tsp, finely chopped
  • Mint leaves – 2tsp, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee – 2tbsp

Method

For the Curry

  1. Dry roast cinnamon, clove, coconut, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, garlic and sesame. Keep aside.
  2. Sauté onions in oil till they turn transparent. Let it cool.
  3. Grind the above roasted spices, de-skinned peanuts, sautéed onions, ginger paste, tamarind, green chillies, red chilli powder and turmeric powder together. Use little water to get a smooth consistency.
  4. In a non stick pan, heat oil and add the above grinded paste, tomato, salt and green chilli paste.
  5. Let it cook till it gets together and leaves the sides of the pan, while stirring occasionally.
  6. Once done, add potatoes. Mix well.

For the Rice

  1. Heat ghee and add cinnamon, clove, bay leaf, ginger paste, garlic paste, slit green chillies, chopped coriander and mint leaves, rice, salt and water.
  2. Let it cook till the rice is done.

Notes

  1. You can serve the curry with puris too.
